A newly married woman has been arrested by the Jigawa State Police Command for allegedly poisoning her husband in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shiisu Lawan Adam Anipr. The incident occurred on Thursday, January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 pm.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased ate a meal prepared by his wife at their residence before suddenly falling critically ill. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead while receiving medical attention.
Detectives attached to the Jahun Divisional Police Headquarters immediately began investigations, leading to the arrest of the wife as the prime suspect. During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison. She reportedly admitted that she sent her cousin to purchase the substance used.
The suspect also told investigators that she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she claimed influenced her actions.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for a thorough investigation. The suspect will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
The police command appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law abiding, and to seek lawful means of resolving family and marital disputes.
The command warned against taking the law into one’s hands, stressing that such actions often lead to irreversible consequences.
