The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee to oversee the planning and execution of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day anniversary.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, inaugurated the committee on Wednesday in Abuja, stressing the need for unity and patriotism as the country prepares to celebrate its milestone.

Akume said the anniversary should not only reflect on Nigeria’s past achievements but also inspire commitment to building a stronger future.

He stated, “This anniversary is a reminder of where we are coming from and where we are going from here. As a nation, we have faced challenges in areas such as political, economic and social issues but have overcome them.”

“An anniversary is not just a celebration of the past. It is a call for action for the future. We must therefore commit ourselves to building a nation where every citizen feels valued and empowered to contribute their quota to the goals and aspirations of the country.”

According to a statement by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the SGF, Segun Imohiosen, activities for the 65th Independence Day celebration will commence with a World Press Conference on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

Other events lined up include a Juma’at Service and Women’s Activities on Friday, September 26; Youth Activities and a Historical Arts Exhibition on Saturday, September 27; a Church Service on Sunday, September 28; and a Public Lecture on Monday, September 29.

The celebrations will climax with a Presidential Broadcast and the Independence Day Parade on October 1, 2025.

As part of preparations, Akume also unveiled the Nigeria @65 Compendium Project Workstation. The project, spearheaded by CherryAfrica Magazine in collaboration with the Office of the SGF, is designed as a media hub for documenting Nigeria’s milestones and development trajectory. It will feature an interview series with key government officials, beginning with Akume himself, to showcase the contributions of Ministries, Departments and Agencies to the country’s growth under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Nigeria, which gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, has continued to commemorate the day annually with events reflecting its political journey, cultural heritage, and national unity.
