The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecast sunshine and hazy weather conditions across the country, with isolated thunderstorms expected in parts of the southern states from Sunday to Tuesday.
In its three day weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet said the northern region would experience a sunny and hazy atmosphere throughout the forecast period, with moderate dust haze expected to reduce visibility in some areas.
The agency added that the central region would witness slight dust haze during the period, while conditions are expected to remain largely sunny and hazy.
According to NiMet, the southern region will experience cloudy conditions during the morning hours, with intervals of sunshine later in the day.
The agency, however, warned that isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall are expected over parts of Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Anambra, Imo, Ogun, and Ondo states.
NiMet stated that on Monday, moderate dust haze would persist over the northern region, while the central states would continue to experience slight dust haze. It added that cloudy conditions with a few hours of sunshine are anticipated in the southern region, with prospects of isolated thunderstorms in some coastal and inland states.
The agency further explained that by Tuesday, moderate dust haze would still dominate weather conditions in the northern part of the country, while the central region would experience sunny and hazy weather. Southern states are expected to record cloudy mornings, with isolated thunderstorms and light rains in some locations.
NiMet urged Nigerians to take necessary precautions, noting that dust particles would be in suspension over the northern region during the forecast period.
“People with asthmatic health conditions and other respiratory issues should be cautious of the present weather conditions,” the agency said.
It also advised motorists to drive carefully during rainfall, adding that airline operators should obtain airport specific weather reports from NiMet to aid effective planning of flight operations.
