The Ogun State Government has assumed responsibility for prosecuting Abass Olalekan, a Local Government Inspector with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Abeokuta South, amid widespread public speculation over the strength of evidence in his case.
Mr. Olalekan was arraigned on 23 March 2026 before Magistrate Court 1 in Isabo on a two-count charge and granted bail, a decision the government says has been widely misinterpreted online.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), clarified that bail was granted solely because the charges are bailable and does not reflect the quality or strength of evidence.
The Attorney-General’s office confirmed it has now taken over the prosecution after receiving the case file from the State Police Command.
The charges stem from a police investigation alleging that Mr. Olalekan was involved with the late Victoria Olapeju Ariyo, who was reportedly pregnant at the time of her death, and that he encouraged and financially supported a procedure that preceded her death.
The government described claims questioning the credibility of evidence and missing witnesses as “false and misleading,” emphasizing that the case is still at a preliminary stage.
It warned the public and media against speculation that could undermine confidence in the judicial process, stressing that all evidence-related issues would be determined in court.
The Attorney-General urged citizens to allow the judicial process to take its course and disregard unverified information circulating about the case.
