The Ogun State House of Assembly has paid glowing tribute to the late Madam Lucia Onabanjo, wife of the State’s first civilian governor, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, describing her as a woman of virtue who played a quiet but stabilising role during her husband’s administration.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, led other lawmakers to honour the former First Lady shortly after formally announcing her death on the floor of the House. Madam Onabanjo reportedly died last week at the age of 100.
Elemide said the late matriarch stood firmly behind her husband and contributed to the moral strength and stability of the government between 1979 and 1983, a period he noted was marked by notable developmental strides across the state.
“She was a strong pillar, a woman of character and discipline, whose support helped to strengthen governance during that era,” the Speaker said.
Following the tributes, members of the Assembly observed a one minute silence in her honour.
Meanwhile, the Speaker has invited key stakeholders in the education sector to an engagement with the House over an issue of urgent public importance. Those invited include the leadership of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Teaching Service Commission, and the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools.
The meeting is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at 11.00am prompt at the Assembly Complex.
