The Ogun State House of Assembly on Tuesday screened nominees of Governor Dapo Abiodun for appointment into the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, urging them to ensure credible and transparent local government elections in the state.
The nominees screened by the lawmakers included Babatunde Adetona Osibodu, Tunji Akoni, Ayodele Bankole, Gbemisola Onasanya and Oluwaremilekun Olaopa.
Presiding over the exercise at the Assembly Complex, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, the Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide, commended the nominees for their impressive track records, noting that their previous service in the commission had been widely acknowledged.
Elemide, however, charged them to improve on their past performance by addressing observed shortcomings in previous electoral exercises, stressing the need for more transparent and credible council polls.
He said the nominees must draw lessons from past elections and work towards reforms that would guarantee rancour-free elections at the grassroots level.
Responding on behalf of the nominees, the Chairman-designate, Babatunde Osibodu, appreciated the Assembly for the confidence reposed in them.
Osibodu assured the lawmakers that the commission would build on its past achievements and deliver improved electoral outcomes in future local government elections across the state.
