The Ogun State Government has assured residents of adequate funding and logistics support for the forthcoming measles–rubella vaccination campaign scheduled to begin on January 27 and end on February 5, 2026.

The assurance was given by the Deputy Governor, Engr. (Mrs) Noimot Salako-Oyedele, during a meeting of the State Task Force on Primary Health Care held at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Salako-Oyedele, who chairs the task force, said the state was fully committed to ensuring the success of the vaccination exercise, describing it as a critical public health intervention.

She noted that the necessary request for funding had already been made and expressed confidence that it would receive prompt approval.

“The request for funding has been made, and we are confident it will be approved promptly to enable us to meet our responsibilities in this very intensive exercise,” she said.

She commended the Ministry of Health, health sector stakeholders, and development partners, particularly UNICEF, for their sustained support to the state’s primary healthcare system.

The Deputy Governor specifically acknowledged the provision of ambulance boats to improve healthcare delivery in riverine communities, noting that such interventions had strengthened service delivery despite prevailing challenges.

Salako-Oyedele reaffirmed the commitment of the administration and the continued support of Governor Dapo Abiodun to all primary healthcare programmes across the state.

She also acknowledged challenges raised in the report presented at the meeting and assured that they would be escalated to the Governor for urgent attention.

She further called on religious organisations, Community Development Associations, women groups, the National Orientation Agency, and the media to intensify public sensitisation ahead of the campaign.

According to her, social media platforms and influencers should be effectively utilised to reach parents and young people across communities.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, applauded development partners, religious leaders, community-based organisations, and other stakeholders for their consistent collaboration with the state government in strengthening healthcare delivery, particularly at the grassroots.

Dr Coker said the task force meeting provided an opportunity to review progress within the primary healthcare system and align strategies ahead of the statewide immunisation exercise.

In his presentation, the Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Health Care Board, Dr Elijah Ogunsola, disclosed that the measles–rubella immunisation campaign would last 10 days and target children aged nine months to 14 years.

He described it as one of the widest age range vaccination exercises ever undertaken in the state.

Ogunsola added that more than 8,000 health workers would be deployed across schools, health facilities, and communities to ensure full coverage, noting that while most local governments recorded improvements in key health indicators in 2025, some challenges remained due to infrastructure and logistics gaps.

Speaking on behalf of development partners, UNICEF representative, Mrs Moloku, commended the Ogun State Government for its commitment to strengthening primary healthcare delivery.

She said the initiative aligned with the global goal of ending preventable diseases in Africa and assured of UNICEF’s continued technical and financial support for the successful implementation of the campaign.
