Ogun State is set to witness a major breakthrough in power supply as Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced that the first phase of the state’s Independent Power Plant (IPP), a 30-megawatt facility, will be commissioned in the next eight weeks.

Speaking after inspecting the project site at Onijogangan near Ewekoro, the governor disclosed that the power plant, developed in partnership with private sector investors, is the first phase of the Ogun State Light Up Project, designed to provide 24-hour electricity to major areas, particularly Abeokuta, the state capital.

“This is the beginning of a new era for power supply in Ogun State,” Abiodun stated. “Abeokuta Metropolis alone requires more than 30 megawatts, but this is the first phase of our planned 100-megawatt power generation capacity. By God’s grace, in the next eight weeks, we will be here to commission this plant and usher in uninterrupted electricity for a substantial part of Abeokuta.”

The governor, visibly impressed with the progress of work at the site, noted that the plant is designed to operate primarily on compressed gas but also has diesel backup to ensure continuous power generation in case of gas supply disruptions.

“We believe that within the next two to three weeks, we will begin soft commissioning using diesel while the gas pipeline is being extended. In about six to eight weeks, the first phase of this plant will be fully completed and commissioned,” he assured.

Abiodun emphasized that the power plant will supply electricity to critical government institutions, including state offices, healthcare facilities, police stations, government quarters, local government offices, and higher institutions. Eventually, power distribution will extend to private homes and industries as capacity expands.

“The aim is to ensure that key public services enjoy uninterrupted electricity, improving efficiency and service delivery. This project aligns with our administration’s vision of making Ogun State an economic hub with stable power supply,” he said.

The governor further revealed that additional power plants are planned for Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ota, ensuring that more parts of the state benefit from reliable electricity.

He credited the federal government’s removal of electricity generation and distribution from the exclusive list as a key factor that allowed the state to embark on power projects.

“Ogun State is now actively involved in power generation, transmission, and distribution. To regulate this, the Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a law establishing the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission to oversee activities in the power sector and provide oversight for investors willing to venture into electricity business within the state,” he explained.

Project Manager, Mr. Selvin Leo, confirmed that the power plant is 90% complete, expressing confidence that it will be delivered within schedule.

“We have all the necessary materials and equipment in place, and with the dedication of our workers, we are on track to complete this project within the given timeline,” Leo assured.
