Gunmen have reportedly kidnapped 10 travellers on the Owo-Ipele-Benin highway in Ondo State, forcing them out of their commercial vehicle and into a nearby forest.
However, the Ondo State Police Command has confirmed that seven persons were abducted in the attack.
Sources revealed that the victims were traveling from a South-South state to Akure when the armed men ambushed their vehicle. Other commercial drivers later discovered the abandoned bus by the roadside and raised the alarm.
According to an eyewitness, “The hoodlums ambushed them and whisked all the occupants of the vehicle into the bush. Since then, no one has heard from them.”
Reports indicate that the kidnappers have contacted the victims’ families, demanding ransom and threatening to kill them if their demands are not met.
Police spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, confirmed the incident, stating that security agencies are actively working to rescue the victims.
“The police received information that a vehicle was attacked on the Owo/Ifon Road, and seven people were suspected to have been abducted. Security operatives moved to the scene, combed the area for a possible rescue, and are conducting a search-and-rescue operation for the abductees,” Odunlami said.
The Owo-Ipele-Benin highway has witnessed several kidnappings and criminal activities in recent times, with residents and travellers expressing growing concerns over safety in the region.
