The member representing Obafemi-Owode State Constituency at the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Soneye Damilola Kayode (SDK), has penned an emotional tribute in honour of former Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, as he clocks 86, describing him as a humane leader, nationalist and a journalism icon whose life’s journey has profoundly shaped Nigeria’s political and media landscape.

In the statement released in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta on Tuesday, Hon. Soneye described Osoba as a “grassrooter” in every sense, noting that his rise from a young cub reporter to an international journalism authority and later, political leader, was both inspirational and transformational.

“Aremo Osoba symbolises many things to many people,” the lawmaker wrote. “To some of us who are his close followers, he is not only a nationalist but someone whose heart is truly with the grassroots. His life reflects the journey of someone who rose from the very foundation.”

Hon. Soneye highlighted Osoba’s early days in journalism, recalling how he began by writing letters to the editor before rising to national prominence. He described how Osoba’s outstanding investigative reporting during the 1966 military coup led to the discovery of the bodies of Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Finance Minister Festus Okotie-Eboh.

According to him, Osoba’s media journey is rooted in merit, doggedness and commitment, leading to professional training at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions including Harvard and Cambridge.

“His years in journalism were marked by diligence and courage. He mastered the profession through hands-on experience and practical knowledge, and it was this same energy that he brought into politics,” he noted.

Describing Osoba as a bridge between the old political order and the modern-day democracy, the lawmaker referenced his affiliation with Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his key role in the pro-democracy struggle during the annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections as part of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

“Osoba is not just a political leader. He is an institution, a voice for the voiceless, and a tireless advocate of bottom-up governance. His influence cuts across rural communities, the middle class and even the elite,” Soneye stated.

He pointed out that Osoba’s time as governor of Ogun State from 1999 to 2003 remains notable for its grassroots development initiatives, especially rural road construction and electrification projects, many of which are still standing more than two decades after he left office.

“At the core of his leadership style is a bottom-up approach that prioritizes community needs and empowers the people,” he added.

The statement also acknowledged the respect Osoba commands from traditional institutions, having been honoured with titles across all three senatorial districts in Ogun State – Araba of Yewaland, Aremo Awujale and Akinrogun Egba. He also holds the title of Oluwo in his hometown of Oba, Abeokuta.

“His leadership has always been about action, not title. He stands in for the poor and the vulnerable, and he does so quietly. That’s why his influence, though understated, remains invaluable,” the lawmaker said.

Hon. Soneye concluded by describing Osoba as “a father figure in every sense” and “our leading light in Obafemi-Owode,” stating that the 86th birthday celebration was an opportunity to appreciate his enduring service to humanity.

“Many happy returns to the Akinrogun of Egbaland. On behalf of the grassroots, I offer this deep gratitude. Congratulations once again, our dear Aremo,” the statement read.
