Osun State University has been thrown into mourning following the death of Professor Siyan Abdulgafar Oyeweso, Provost of the Postgraduate College and one of the institution’s pioneer scholars. He died in the early hours of Tuesday after a brief illness.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the University Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, who described his passing as a huge loss to the institution, the academic community and the nation.
In honour of the late historian and administrator, the University directed that all academic and administrative activities across its campuses close by noon on Tuesday. The decision, according to the management, is a mark of respect for a man widely regarded as an intellectual pillar of the institution.
Speaking on behalf of the University, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, expressed deep grief over the scholar’s death. He said the University had lost a mentor, a builder and a model of academic excellence.
“Osun State University is deeply pained by the sudden departure of Professor Siyan Oyeweso. He was not only a pillar of our academic structure but also a mentor, a builder, and a shining example of scholarly excellence. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this moment of grief,” Professor Adebooye said.
The University extended condolences to his family, colleagues, associates and the academic community, praying for comfort during this difficult moment. It also asked for divine strength for the bereaved family.
“May Almighty God grant eternal rest to the soul of this distinguished academic and grant his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
