The Owa of Igbajoland, Oba Philip Adegboyega Famodun III, has died at the age of sixty seven, throwing the ancient community into mourning.

According to a statement issued by Prince David Adekunle Famodun on behalf of the Gbeleru Royal Family, the notice of his passing was formally released on Saturday.

The family said the late traditional ruler served his people with sincerity and dedication from the day he ascended the throne passed away on Friday after a brief illness.

In the statement, the family said, “We announce the passing of our revered traditional ruler, Oba Philip Adegboyega Famodun III, with a deep sense of loss and gratitude to Almighty God. He lived and led with calm strength and compassion.”

Oba Famodun was installed as the 30th Owa of Igbajoland on November 24, 2022, during the tenure of former Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola.

His installation later became a subject of contention following a white paper issued by Governor Ademola Adeleke. However, the Osun State High Court reinstated him on January 30, 2025, allowing him to continue his reign.

The family noted that the monarch made deliberate efforts to build peace and harmony within the town. “He worked tirelessly to unite the people of Igbajo and champion development. His peaceful nature and wise counsel will remain part of his enduring legacy,” the statement added.

The late monarch is survived by his wife and children. Burial details have not yet been announced.
