Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on Nigerians to unite in building a country where every citizen is treated equally, regardless of tribe or religion.
The governor made the appeal while acknowledging the warm reception he received from residents of the South East, despite the region’s diverse ethnic and political affiliations.
Makinde spoke in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, during the 58th birthday celebration and book launch organized by Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Chief Ali Odefa, on Saturday.
According to him, “It will be a great birthday gift for me if we make up our minds and participate to make our voices heard by calling for true federalism in the Federal Republic of Nigeria; so we must not be bystanders.”
He described the recognition and respect he received as a testament to the spirit of national unity, stressing that his visit was in line with God’s plan. Makinde also commended his host, Odefa, whom he referred to as a close friend and adviser in political matters.
The governor noted that the imprint of the Igbo people could be seen across various sectors in the country and urged them to continue contributing to the nation’s progress, regardless of political affiliation.
Represented by Deputy Governor Mrs. Patricia Obila, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru described Makinde’s biography, titled The Seyi Makinde Story, as a valuable compendium of knowledge.
He encouraged attendees to purchase the book and commended Makinde for his achievements in infrastructure, education, health, and other sectors in Oyo State.
Chief Odefa described Makinde as a courageous and detribalized leader, revealing that he had named one of his sons after the governor to immortalize him.
