The Oyo State Government has sealed an industry over repeated environmental violations and declared a state of emergency on indiscriminate waste disposal in markets and public spaces.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Architect Abdulmojeed Mogbojubola, ordered the closure of the facility following multiple complaints and petitions regarding the health risks posed by its operations.
The affected company, Fountain Manufacturing Company Ltd, located in the Oluyole area of Ibadan, had allegedly been emitting hazardous fumes, prompting an outcry from residents. Despite several interventions by the ministry to mediate the situation, the company reportedly refused to comply with environmental regulations.
In addition to sealing the industry, the government also shut down a popular lounge, Casta De Lounge, situated along Akala Expressway, for dumping waste on the highway median. Investigations revealed that the lounge had failed to engage government-approved waste collectors and had repeatedly flouted environmental laws.
Addressing market leaders in Ibadan, Mogbojubola emphasized the urgency of tackling waste mismanagement across the state. “The government has begun distributing skip bins to major markets to put an end to indiscriminate waste dumping on roads and unauthorized locations,” he stated.
He assured that the waste disposal containers would be evenly distributed to all markets and public spaces, urging market executives to prioritize cleanliness to prevent market closures.
The Commissioner also reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring a clean and healthy environment. “We are fully committed to eliminating indiscriminate refuse dumping in markets and public places,” he added, noting that he had personally supervised waste evacuation efforts.
The state government urged businesses and residents to adhere strictly to environmental laws to avoid sanctions.
