The Oyo State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers has suspended its indefinite strike action, bringing teachers back to classrooms after the industrial action was triggered by the abduction of schoolchildren in the Ogbomosho area of the state.
The decision was announced on Wednesday in a statement jointly signed by the state NUT Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and the union’s Secretary, Olukayode Salami, following consultations with the Oyo State Government and other stakeholders.
According to the union, the suspension of the strike followed a review of the prevailing security situation across the state and appeals by the government.
“The State Wing Executive Council, after a careful review of the security situation and consultations with relevant stakeholders, has resolved to suspend the indefinite strike action,” the statement read.
It added that the decision would enable teachers to return to classrooms while monitoring efforts to strengthen security in schools.
The union had commenced the strike over concerns arising from the abduction of schoolchildren in Ogbomosho, Orire Local Government Area, insisting that improved security measures were needed to safeguard pupils, teachers and other school workers.
The NUT expressed appreciation to the Oyo State Government and stakeholders for their intervention and urged members to resume their duties while remaining vigilant.
The union also reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and safety of teachers and pupils, stressing that it would continue to engage relevant authorities to ensure schools remain secure.
