Abuja – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crisis escalated on Thursday as the Wike-backed National Caretaker Committee, led by Honorable Mohammed Abdulrahman, announced January 9, 2026 as the commencement date for state congresses across the country.
The disclosure came after a meeting of the committee in Abuja, where plans for the party’s national convention were also outlined.
The committee, in a statement read by its National Publicity Secretary, Haruna Junguda Mohammed, confirmed the dissolution of state working committees in 14 states, including Borno, Bauchi, Oyo, Zamfara, Yobe, Ekiti, Bayelsa, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Delta, Taraba, Kano, and Lagos. Caretaker committees will oversee party affairs in the affected states pending the congress outcomes.
The Wike camp held the meeting just a day after the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) concluded consultations with PDP stakeholders to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Turaki-led NWC, which emerged from the November 15 Ibadan convention, met with former governors, ex-ministers, state chairmen, ex-NWC members, and National Assembly caucuses to discuss the party’s future.
In a strongly worded communique, the Abdulrahman-led committee warned the Turaki-led NWC to stop presenting itself as the PDP leadership.
It stated: “There is only one genuine and legitimate PDP, headed by Honorable Abdulrahman Mohammed. The National Caretaker Committee warns anyone putting the image of the party to disrepute to refrain from that forthwith. Claims that the Turaki exco has been accepted by INEC are false. We challenge Turaki to produce the code with which he uploaded his exco to the INEC portal.”
The caretaker committee also announced new appointments, expanding its membership to include Professor Adenike Ogunse as Women Leader, Engineer Deji Dohati as Deputy National Secretary, Senator Olaka Ogunwu as Treasurer, Honorable Jungu Haruna Mohammed as National Publicity Secretary, and Ambassador Ibrahim Bala-Aboki as Youth Leader.
