The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will begin full nationwide enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy from January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns linked to the misuse of unauthorised tinted vehicle glass.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who explained that the decision followed a review of emerging security threats across the country.
According to the police, recent security assessments revealed an increase in criminal activities carried out with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass.
Such vehicles, the Force noted, have been used by criminals to conceal their identities while committing offences including armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
The Police clarified that there is no court order restraining the enforcement of the law regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles. It added that enforcement was earlier suspended in the interest of transparency and public convenience, to allow motorists adequate time to regularise their documents and complete the permit application process without pressure.
The statement further noted that the temporary suspension had been exploited by some individuals and organised criminal groups, thereby worsening security challenges in some parts of the country.
“In view of recent developments and the disturbing rise in crimes involving vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass, the Nigeria Police Force has found it necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard lives and property,” the statement said.
The Police advised vehicle owners and motorists to ensure they obtain valid tinted glass permits before the enforcement date, warning that defaulters would be dealt with in accordance with the law once the exercise resumes nationwide.
