The national power grid collapsed again on Tuesday, marking the second system failure in just four days.
Reports from the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry indicate that power generation plunged to 39 megawatts at 11 a.m., down sharply from 3,825MW recorded at 10 a.m. The grid had earlier peaked at 4,762MW as of 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
The collapse left electricity distribution companies without power supply. Load allocation to all Discos dropped to zero, meaning no company was able to supply electricity to consumers at the time of the incident.
EkoDisCo confirmed the outage in a statement, saying a system collapse occurred at 10:48 a.m., leading to a total loss of power across its network.
“Kindly be informed that there was a system collapse at 10:48 hrs, which has resulted to a loss of power supply across our network. We are currently working with our TCN partners as we hope for the speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power supply is restored. Kindly bear with us,” the statement said.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has yet to explain the cause of the collapse. However, the operator confirmed that the outage occurred around 12:40 p.m. after several 330kV transmission lines tripped simultaneously.
This latest failure is the second grid collapse in January 2026 and the third in less than one month. The national grid previously collapsed on December 29, 2025, and again on Friday, January 23, 2026.
