The Abeokuta South Division of the Nigerian Red Cross Society has taken a significant step in grooming future humanitarian leaders by training young pupils in first aid, personal hygiene, and safety skills.

The one-day training, held on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Ogun Montessori Nursery and Primary School, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, focused on Junior Red Cross (JRC) Training for 23 pupils aged between 6 and 10 years.

The exercise, conducted on the playing field of Victoroti College, Olokuta, Idi-Aba, ran from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and covered JRC songs, personal hygiene, road safety, parade practice, and physical exercise.

Speaking at the event, the Divisional Coordinator, Mr. G.O. Oyelami, who led five trainers from the Ogun State Branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, expressed satisfaction with the enthusiasm displayed by the young participants.

“It is important to catch them young, equip them with essential life-saving skills, and prepare them for humanitarian service,” he said.

The training adopted an interactive and participatory approach, featuring lectures, discussions, practical demonstrations, and hands-on exercises.

Four teachers and the Headmaster of Ogun Montessori Nursery and Primary School were also in attendance to support the initiative.

The pupils eagerly embraced the training, actively engaging in every session. “I learned how to cross the road safely and take care of my body,” one of the participants said excitedly.

The trainers also received immediate positive feedback from both the pupils and teachers, as the children demonstrated improved knowledge and skills in each topic covered.

At the end of the training, the team reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing Junior Red Cross members, ensuring they acquire the necessary knowledge and practical skills to become responsible and safety-conscious individuals.
