In a major humanitarian effort to support those affected by the 2024 floods in Ogun State, the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has provided Cash Voucher Assistance (CVA) to 500 victims across two severely affected local government areas—Obafemi Owode and Ogun Waterside.

The relief effort, which ran from April 9th to 13th, 2025, was carried out in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

The assistance came in the form of ATM cards loaded with funds to help vulnerable individuals begin rebuilding their lives.

The distribution took place in five communities: Isheri and Arigbabuwo in Obafemi Owode LGA, and Igele, Ibiade, and Iwopin in Ogun Waterside LGA.

Mr. Taye Ajayi, NRCS Ogun Branch Secretary, led the team alongside other officials, including Disaster Management Officer Instructor Aliu Fatai, Branch Communications Officer Instructor Oduwole Oluwasegun, BTO Instructor Akinmade Niyi, and CEA Focal Person Trainer Bashiru Daisi.

The exercise was supervised by Mr. Abdullahi Ganiyu Afunkulola, Warehouse and Store Officer from the NRCS National Headquarters.

Speaking during the exercise, Ajayi reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Red Cross Society to respond swiftly and effectively to disaster situations.

“The Nigerian Red Cross Society is dedicated to easing the suffering of people in vulnerable situations. This assistance is not just about giving cash—it’s about restoring dignity and helping families get back on their feet,” he said.

Victims selected for the cash assistance included the elderly, persons with disabilities, the sick, and pregnant women, with a particular focus on those from the most impacted communities.

Traditional leaders from the beneficiary communities applauded the initiative. His Royal Highness Oba Bamgbade Sulaimon Adekunle, the Olofin of Isheri, described the intervention as a welcome surprise.

“Many times, organizations make promises and never return, but the Red Cross has proven to be different. They came, they listened, and now we are seeing the results,” the monarch stated.

Similarly, His Royal Highness Oba Adeniyi Sunday Agbojo, the Oba of Iwopin, expressed deep appreciation on behalf of his people.

“We are grateful for this support. It means a lot to our people who lost everything to the floods. We will ensure this aid is put to good use,” he pledged.
