The Nigerian Red Cross Society has expressed deep sorrow over a catastrophic flood that struck Kpege Mokwa in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State in the early hours of Thursday, May 29.
Initial reports had placed the death toll at 21, but fresh updates now estimate that over 100 people may have lost their lives, with several residents still unaccounted for.
In a statement issued on Friday, the humanitarian organisation described the incident as heartbreaking, pointing to the scale of destruction and human suffering recorded in the affected community.
“Heavy rainfall began around 3 a.m. while most residents were still asleep, leading to the sudden and tragic loss of lives and displacement of families,” the statement said.
The Red Cross confirmed that 21 bodies had so far been recovered but warned that the casualty figure was likely to rise as rescue and recovery operations continue. It added that its volunteers were already on the ground, providing life saving first aid and supporting ongoing search and rescue efforts.
“Our volunteers are on the ground, offering critical support to survivors and aiding in locating those still missing,” the organisation stated. “We remain committed to supporting government led initiatives and are working closely with local authorities to deliver emergency relief.”
The Red Cross also extended its condolences to families affected by the tragedy, assuring them of continued support.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the bereaved families. In these trying times, we stand with the people of Kpege Mokwa and will continue our humanitarian work to bring relief to the affected communities,” the statement added.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the vulnerability of riverine and low lying communities in Niger State, where seasonal rainfall, poor drainage systems, and weak flood management infrastructure continue to pose serious risks to lives and property.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also reacted to the disaster, describing it as a national tragedy. In a statement released on Thursday, he directed emergency agencies to mobilise immediately.
“We must do everything in our power to assist the victims and prevent further loss of life,” the president said.
