The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block access to all pornographic websites in the country, citing concerns over their negative impact on society.

The resolution was passed on Tuesday following a motion moved by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina State, who argued that pornography has become a global challenge that Nigeria has failed to address adequately.

Tafoki described Nigeria as a highly religious nation where major faiths condemn nudity and obscenity. He also pointed out that several countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have enacted laws banning pornographic content.

“As a country that upholds moral and religious values, it is necessary for Nigeria to take decisive action against the dangers of cyber pornography,” he said.

He warned that unrestricted access to pornographic content could contribute to social issues such as adultery, prostitution, and addiction.

“Renowned psychologists and sociologists have repeatedly cautioned about the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of viewing pornography,” Tafoki added.

The House urged the NCC to act swiftly in implementing the ban and ensuring that internet service providers comply with the directive.

Lawmakers emphasized that restricting access to obscene content would help protect the moral fabric of the nation and safeguard young people from exposure to harmful materials.
