No fewer than seven persons have died, while four others sustained injuries in a fatal road accident in Yobe State.
The Yobe State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday in Damaturu by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim.
According to the statement, the accident occurred on December 26, 2025, at about 4.30 pm along the Badejo axis, after the Potiskum Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress call.
“The incident involved a Sharon bus conveying passengers from Lawanti area of Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State to Maiduguri, Borno State,” the police said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle, driven by one Gambo Abbo, suffered a rear tyre burst while in motion.
“The sudden mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and plunged into the bush,” the statement added.
The police explained that the driver and four passengers died instantly, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the State Specialist Hospital, Potiskum, for treatment.
“Sadly, two of the injured later died while receiving medical attention,” the PPRO said.
The deceased were identified as Gambo Abbo, 35, Umalkhairi, 18, Rabiu Abubakar, 28, Fatuma Hassan, 28, Amal Abubakar, 3, Adamu Bello, 4, and Zarau Alhaji, 27.
The command said the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital morgue, while efforts are ongoing to contact and formally notify their relatives.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Emmanuel Ado, expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and wished the injured a quick recovery.
He cautioned motorists against speeding and reckless driving, urging them to always observe traffic regulations and ensure regular vehicle maintenance, particularly tyres, brakes and steering systems.
According to him, strict adherence to safety measures remains essential in preventing avoidable road accidents, as the command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
