The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a major milestone, revealing that the national electricity grid remained stable for 421 consecutive days—from 20 July 2022 to 13 September 2023—without experiencing any collapse.
The achievement was recorded under the leadership of the Managing Director, Engineer Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, whose tenure has seen significant strides in project delivery and digital transformation initiatives.
Central to these efforts is the Nigerian Electricity Grid Maintenance, Expansion, and Rehabilitation Programme (NEGMERP), a strategic framework designed to modernise grid operations.
In a statement, TCN highlighted the role of digital innovation in enhancing grid management. The company upgraded its web portal, NSONG, to improve transparency and facilitate real-time data exchange essential to market operations.
Additionally, TCN developed software that provides near real-time visibility of generators and substations to controllers at the National Control Centre (NCC), significantly improving operational oversight.
Abdulaziz also spearheaded the contract for a new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS) and communication upgrade, replacing the obsolete NEPA-era systems. While full implementation of the SCADA/EMS network is ongoing, TCN continues to employ small-scale solutions that deliver immediate, tangible results.
The company has also prioritised automation and digitalisation of its internal processes, alongside proactive maintenance practices and procurement of spare parts to prevent system disruptions and ensure consistent power transmission.
“Our commitment to timely maintenance and infrastructure upgrades underpins the reliability and efficiency of the national grid,” the statement said.
Beyond technical improvements, TCN has invested in its workforce by enhancing office complexes and constructing modern facilities in key locations including Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Edo, Imo, and Akwa Ibom states.
The management emphasises that a conducive work environment fosters productivity and a positive organisational culture.
