Three persons have lost their lives and six others sustained injuries in a tragic accident that occurred on Wednesday morning along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.
The incident, which involved five vehicles, happened around 7:45 a.m. near the Sango Ota axis, Ogun State. According to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), the crash was triggered by a cement truck experiencing brake failure.
Mr. Adekunle Ajibade, the South-West Area Commander of TRACE, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), explaining that the unregistered truck was speeding towards the tollgate from Sango when the brakes failed, causing it to ram into four other vehicles.
“The cement truck was coming from Sango Ota at high speed when it suffered brake failure and collided with four other vehicles along the route,” Ajibade stated.
He said the aftermath was devastating, as three individuals died at the scene, while six others were seriously injured.
“The corpses of the deceased have been deposited at Ifo General Hospital Mortuary, and the injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment at the same hospital,” he added.
Ajibade issued a strong warning to motorists and commercial drivers, stressing the need for caution and regular vehicle checks to avoid such avoidable tragedies.
“Drivers must ensure their vehicles are in perfect working condition before taking them onto the road,” he said. “Excessive speed and reckless driving have become too frequent and must be curbed to prevent needless loss of lives.”
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, TRACE officials cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow on the busy expressway.
