A police officer on duty was fatally stabbed on Wednesday morning by suspected thugs in the Arakale area of Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The incident reportedly followed a confrontation between the officer and a group of uncooperative individuals.
Police Public Relations Officer, Olushola Ayanlade, confirmed that what began as a routine engagement quickly escalated into a violent attack, leaving the officer with critical injuries.
“The officer was stabbed by one of the assailants while performing his lawful duties. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries,” Ayanlade stated, describing the death as a painful loss to the police command.
Two suspects, identified as Shina Jacob, 25, and Felix Olalekan, 32, have been arrested in connection with the attack.
Ayanlade assured that the suspects would face prosecution once investigations are concluded.
He also urged the public to avoid spreading false information that could incite panic or misrepresent facts.
The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that attacks on officers performing lawful duties would attract decisive legal action.
