President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.

The approval was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Adeniyi’s first tenure extension was due to expire on August 1, 2026, but the latest extension was granted to enable him to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window initiative and ensure an orderly succession process within the service.

The Presidency said the extension would also allow the Customs boss to work with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and facilitate the compulsory retirement of officers who have attained 60 years of age or completed 35 years in service.

Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and rose through the ranks over the years.

He became a Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023 before President Tinubu appointed him Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023.

The Presidency expressed confidence that the extension would support the ongoing reforms in the Customs Service and ensure a seamless leadership transition.
