A fatal road accident on Monday along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway has claimed six lives and left 23 others injured following a lone truck crash around the Foursquare Camp area in Ogun State.
The accident involved a DAF CF 380 truck, painted white and blue, with registration number SNA 287 XA. The truck was reportedly travelling from the northern part of the country to Lagos and was carrying passengers alongside cattle when it crashed.
The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that the crash occurred at about 11.27 am and was attributed to excessive speed and fatigue on the part of the driver.
Speaking in a statement made available to journalists, the sector spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, said rescue operatives arrived at the scene within minutes of the incident.
He said, “The Federal Road Safety Corps Ogun Sector Command reports a fatal road traffic crash on the Ibadan Lagos Expressway near the Foursquare Camp area. The incident occurred at about 11.27 hours, and the rescue team from the Ogunmakin Unit Command arrived at the scene within two minutes.”
Odunsi-Oyewole explained that a total of 29 persons were involved in the crash, noting that six persons lost their lives while 23 sustained varying degrees of injuries. He added that 29 cows were also killed in the accident.
According to him, the truck was involved in mixed loading, as it conveyed both passengers and cattle, a practice he described as dangerous.
“This was a case of mixed loading of cattle and passengers. FRSC strongly discourages this practice because there is no segregation between goods and humans. In the event of a crash, it becomes difficult to separate humans from goods, which can lead to avoidable loss of lives,” he said.
The injured victims were rushed to Oreoluwa Hospital at the GOFAMINT Camp, Ogunmakin, and Victory Hospital in Ogere, while the corpses of the deceased were deposited at the same medical facilities.
The FRSC spokesperson disclosed that investigations were ongoing to determine other mechanical or contributing factors that may have led to the crash.
He urged motorists, particularly operators of heavy duty vehicles, to ensure regular vehicle maintenance, observe speed limits, and avoid driving while fatigued.
Odunsi-Oyewole also advised drivers to comply strictly with road safety regulations, stressing that adherence to safety rules remains critical in preventing needless loss of lives on the nation’s highways.
