The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has called on Nigerians to use the Valentine’s Day celebration to promote love while ensuring safety against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
NACA’s Director General, Dr. Temitope Ilori, in a statement on Wednesday, emphasized that love and intimacy should go hand in hand with responsibility, urging Nigerians to make informed choices that protect their health and that of their partners.
“This Valentine’s season, let’s celebrate love by making informed choices and taking steps to protect ourselves and our partners from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs),” she said.
She noted that while HIV remains a significant public health concern, it is entirely preventable.
“Engaging in risky behaviors—such as unprotected sex, multiple partners, or substance use that impairs judgment—can increase the risk of HIV transmission,” Ilori warned.
She further stressed the importance of regular HIV testing, saying, “Knowing your status is key to protecting yourself and others. Regular HIV testing should be a part of your healthcare routine.”
NACA reassured Nigerians that free HIV testing is available at all government-owned hospitals and encouraged people to take advantage of it.
“This Valentine’s Day, show love—not just for others, but for yourself—by making safe and healthy choices,” Ilori added.
She urged Nigerians to “love responsibly, get tested, and make informed decisions,” reiterating that the tools to prevent HIV are readily available.
