Former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has said she has no plans to remarry following the death of her husband, former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing her decision as a personal and pragmatic choice.

Aisha made this known during a conversation with Dr Charles Omole, author of a newly unveiled biography titled From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari. The book was presented at the State House, Abuja, on Monday.

According to the author, Aisha’s position was neither moral nor ideological but rooted in her current stage of life. “She will not remarry, she says, almost with a shrug. It is not a moral pronouncement so much as a pragmatic one. She has grandchildren. One husband was enough,” the book noted.

The 22 chapter biography chronicled Buhari’s life from his childhood in Daura, Katsina State, to his final days in a London hospital in mid July 2025. It also reflected on the former First Lady’s role and choices, particularly her stance on widowhood, which the author described as a rejection of cultural expectations often placed on widows.

“In a culture that sometimes reads remarriage as betrayal or saintliness, her answer refuses both scripts. It is simply a woman naming the contours of her future,” the book explained.

Aisha Buhari also outlined plans for the next phase of her life, saying she intends to maintain a quieter public presence while focusing on family, philanthropy, and travel. She is expected to divide her time between spending moments with her grandchildren, holidaying with friends and associates, and running her philanthropic initiatives.

The book further revealed that she would continue overseeing the Aisha Buhari Foundation as well as the cardiovascular and medical centre in Kano, which has reportedly completed over 200 medical procedures.

“She will host, collaborate, and extend the same ethic of care that animated her politics into a quieter, more sustainable hospitality,” Omole wrote.

Reflecting on her years in the political spotlight, the author described Aisha’s choice as a personal reset after decades of public scrutiny. “If the republic expects a politics of eternal return, she offers a politics of departure instead. Let others take the stage. Let the house heal,” he said.

Aisha Buhari married Muhammadu Buhari on December 2, 1989, following his divorce in 1988. Born in 1971 in Adamawa State, she became First Lady in 2015 when Buhari returned to power. The couple were married for 35 years and had five children.
