The Katsina State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Sahabi Rabi’u, age 35, for the killing of a nursing mother and her 10-month-old baby in Sheme village, Faskari Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, said in a statement on Thursday that the suspect was tracked and arrested after an investigation linked him to the crime.
According to the statement, “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the commission of the offence and further mentioned having conspired with a friend, now at large, to lure the victims to the outskirts of Sheme village, where they were killed. The bodies were burnt and thrown into a nearby well.”
Sadiq explained that the police discovered during the investigation that the suspect and his accomplice were in a paternity dispute with the victim before the situation escalated.
He said, “They allegedly conspired to eliminate the victim and her child.”
He added that the bodies have been recovered and that efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing accomplice.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Shehu, condemned the act and described it as “barbaric and inhumane”.
He assured residents that the command will ensure justice is served and appealed for useful information that could help arrest the second suspect.
The PPRO also reminded the public that all information shared with the command will be treated with confidentiality.
The development comes days after the command arrested a 16-year-old boy, Nuhu Haruna of Dutsinma LGA, over the killing of his stepmother, following what the police described as a violent misunderstanding.
