As the world marks World Book and Copyright Day, the SixthSense Initiative has emphasized the vital role of literature in advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aligning this year’s theme: “The role of literature in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
In a statement signed by the Founder and Coordinator of the organization, Abiodun Oladimeji Lasile DL MnbR, the nonprofit organization stressed that literature remains a powerful tool to inspire, educate, and drive action across all sectors of society.
“This theme highlights the significance of literature in promoting awareness and action towards achieving the 17 SDGs, which aim to end poverty, fight inequality, and tackle climate change, among other goals,” Lasile stated.
He noted that through its ongoing activities such as establishing and reawakening school book clubs, the SixthSense Initiative promotes reading culture and human capacity development among children.
“Using literature textbooks to foster a reading culture in young minds aligns perfectly with our mission,” Lasile added.
Lasile also lauded global efforts like the African Sustainable Development Goals Book Club, which was launched in 2021 and features curated book lists tailored to each SDG in languages such as English, French, Arabic, and Kiswahili. “Such initiatives show how literature can be used practically to advance sustainable development,” he said.
He further urged stakeholders and the public to recognize the transformative power of literature in achieving a more equitable and just society.
“By harnessing the impact of stories, literature can inspire, educate, and mobilise individuals to work towards a common goal – creating a more equitable, just, and sustainable world,” Lasile concluded.
