The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria has urged Nigerians travelling during the yuletide to patronise only recognised motor parks, warning that roadside transport arrangements pose serious safety risks.
The Chairman of RTEAN in Kwara State, Mr Abdulrahman Onikijipa, gave the advice on Thursday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ilorin.
He said the festive season usually comes with increased movement of people, a situation that also attracts individuals with questionable intentions who disguise themselves as transporters.
Onikijipa explained that many travellers often abandon motor parks for roadside vehicles because of cheaper fares, describing the practice as dangerous and avoidable.
According to him, recognised motor parks provide a level of accountability that helps to protect passengers.
“It is safer to go to the parks where you will be properly registered before embarking on your journey.”
“During the yuletide season, there are different people parading themselves as transporters but with evil agendas. People should not just board any vehicle because it is cheap,” he said.
He stressed that documentation at motor parks makes it easier to trace vehicles and drivers in the event of accidents, crimes, or emergencies, adding that safety should never be sacrificed for cost.
The RTEAN chairman also advised drivers to operate strictly from designated parks and avoid picking passengers along the roadside.
He further cautioned motorists against excessive speeding, noting that many road accidents recorded during festive periods are linked to reckless driving.
“I urge drivers to avoid speeding and to stop picking passengers by the roadside.”
“The festive season is always busy, and everyone must be careful to ensure lives and property are protected,” Onikijipa said.
His appeal comes as thousands of Nigerians prepare to travel across the country for Christmas and New Year celebrations, a period traditionally marked by heavy traffic and increased road activity.
