Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has firmly turned down an appeal to join the coalition of opposition figures preparing to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 election.

Sowore, in a strongly-worded statement on Wednesday, dismissed the call by activist Deji Adeyanju, making it clear he would not align himself with individuals he described as part of Nigeria’s long-standing political rot.

The rights activist accused several key members of the proposed coalition of being responsible for decades of corruption, oppression, and betrayal of democratic values in Nigeria.

“I did not join Bola Ahmed Tinubu in distributing heroin and cocaine in Chicago. I did not join Atiku Abubakar in looting the Nigerian Customs dry. I did not join David Mark when he stole funds meant to fix our telephones and later crushed our democratic hopes on June 12,” Sowore declared.

He further said, “I did not join Abubakar Malami in looting the treasury under Buhari’s regime or Nasir El-Rufai in fueling religious genocide in Southern Kaduna. I did not join Peter Obi while he cleared goods for Abacha. I have never joined an armed robbery gang or pledged allegiance to any cult, no matter how powerful.”

Sowore emphasised that his only loyalty remains with the oppressed, the cheated, and those silenced by what he described as years of bad governance and political exploitation.

“I will only align with those ready to end this national nightmare caused by the same political actors now masquerading as opposition heroes,” he stressed.

Adeyanju had publicly appealed to Sowore to reconsider his position, arguing that extraordinary times required difficult compromises and that uniting with other opposition figures could strengthen efforts to unseat Tinubu.

But Sowore rejected the appeal, insisting that Nigeria’s future could not be entrusted to those he believes helped destroy it.

“Nigeria must be free from these evil doers,” Sowore concluded, vowing to continue his revolutionary struggle for justice and accountability in the country.
