The Cross River State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a couple, Mr. Onun Ikoli, a 52-year-old teacher, and his wife, Mrs. Itam Onun, after 360 bags of marijuana weighing 4.706 tonnes were found in their property in Yakurr local government area.
State NDLEA Commander, Mr. John Anteyi, said the suspects claimed the drugs belonged to a tenant who has since gone into hiding. Mrs. Onun told reporters, “I was arrested and brought here because I am the landlady. My husband and I collected N50,000 rent from a tenant, not knowing he was a drug dealer.”
Anteyi added, “The couple denied any involvement and insisted they were unaware of their tenant’s illicit activities. Our investigation is ongoing, and the NDLEA boss, Rtd Brigadier General Maruwa, is committed to ending this trade.
We urge residents to provide information that could lead to the arrest of more suspects. The Cross River State Governor has also been very supportive of our operations.”
