The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Ogun State Branch, has called for stronger collaboration among governments, corporate organisations and individuals to address growing humanitarian challenges linked to climate change, food insecurity and public health concerns.

The appeal was made by the State Chairman of the organisation, Jide Ibrahim Bello, during a press conference held on Friday at the Red Cross Secretariat in Abeokuta as part of activities marking the 2026 World Red Cross Day celebration.

Speaking on the theme, “United for Humanity,” Bello said the global humanitarian situation required collective efforts and sustained support for vulnerable communities.

He noted that the organisation had continued to respond to public health and disaster-related emergencies across the state despite operational challenges.

According to him, the society partnered with the Ogun State Ministry of Health on Mpox response initiatives, including volunteer training on surveillance and community engagement.

Bello added that the branch also conducted nutritional needs assessments in selected communities to tackle food insecurity and malnutrition among children.

He further explained that under the REBUMAA Project, the organisation reached over 3,000 households in Abeokuta North, Obafemi Owode and Ogun Waterside Local Government Areas through flood sensitisation campaigns and early warning systems.

The chairman disclosed that the branch also established a Disaster Risk Reduction Club at St. Kizito Senior School, Iwopin, to promote humanitarian values and disaster preparedness among youths.

He, however, identified the absence of a permanent branch office and inadequate logistics as major challenges confronting the society.

“These challenges serve as motivation to push further. The lessons we have learned are clear, community engagement is essential, early warning systems save lives, and partnerships multiply our impact,” Bello said.

As part of activities marking the celebration, the Ogun Red Cross held a Jumat service and press engagement on May 8, while a solidarity walk and novelty match is scheduled for May 9. A thanksgiving service will hold on May 10 at New Covenant Church, Ibara, Abeokuta.

Bello called on government agencies, philanthropists and corporate organisations to support the humanitarian activities of the Red Cross.

“The Red Cross is more than an organisation, it is a symbol of hope and a lifeline for the vulnerable,” he said.

World Red Cross Day is celebrated annually in honour of the founder of the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, Henry Dunant.
