Ogun State Governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has described the death of the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, as a significant loss to the Yoruba nation, noting that his passing has created a huge void in the region’s political landscape.
Abiodun, in a condolence message, expressed sadness over the death of the elder statesman, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday, describing him as a nationalist whose life was defined by service, patriotism and commitment to democracy.
The governor commiserated with Afenifere, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, prominent Yoruba leaders, as well as the family, associates and admirers of the deceased.
He said Fasoranti was one of the enduring voices in Nigeria’s democratic struggle, whose courage, convictions and sacrifices contributed to the country’s political development.
According to Abiodun, the late Afenifere leader played a significant role in the struggle for democracy, particularly during the years of military rule, earning recognition as one of the foremost advocates of democratic governance and constitutional rule.
He noted that Fasoranti remained steadfast in his advocacy for justice, equity, good governance and restructuring, adding that his interventions in national affairs reflected his commitment to building a united and prosperous Nigeria.
The governor described the deceased as one of the few surviving members of a generation of nationalist-minded leaders who challenged authoritarian rule and championed democratic freedoms.
He said Fasoranti’s death had left a significant gap in the Yoruba socio-political landscape, adding that his contributions to the advancement of democracy and national development would remain relevant for generations to come.
Abiodun added that the late elder statesman’s legacy would endure through the values he upheld, the causes he championed and the Nigerians he inspired through his commitment to good governance and national unity.
He urged Afenifere, the people of Ondo State, the Yoruba nation and the deceased’s family to take solace in the remarkable life he lived and his contributions to society.
The governor prayed that God would grant Fasoranti eternal rest and give his family, associates and the entire Yoruba nation the strength to bear the loss.
