The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution supporting the establishment of state police as part of the proposed amendments to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The resolution followed the consideration of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which seeks to provide for the establishment of State Police Services.
The report of the Ad-hoc Committee on Constitutional Review, chaired by a former Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, was presented before the lawmakers for consideration.
Oluomo presented the committee’s report covering 26 clauses and sectional amendments to the Constitution. The proposed amendments addressed different aspects of the bill, including the substitution, insertion and alteration of specific constitutional provisions.
Members of the Assembly voted in favour of all the clauses and sections contained in the proposed amendments.
Following the consideration, the motion for the adoption of the committee’s report was moved by the committee chairman and seconded by Hon. Adegoke Adeyanju. The motion received unanimous support through a voice vote.
The House Leader, Hon. Yusuf Sherif, subsequently moved that the report be adopted as a resolution of the Assembly. The motion was seconded by the Chief Whip, Omolola Bakare, and unanimously supported by the lawmakers.
Speaking after the passage of the resolution, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, said the Assembly had joined other state legislatures across the country in supporting the establishment of state police, describing the decision as historic.
He said the resolution reflected the position of the lawmakers and the people of Ogun State on the need to establish state police to strengthen security and improve the protection of lives and property.
According to him, the proposed security arrangement would contribute to the social well-being of residents and promote economic development across the state.
Elemide noted that the establishment of state police would support efforts to improve security measures and address the security needs of communities.
The Speaker subsequently directed that a clean copy of the resolution be transmitted to the National Assembly to formally communicate Ogun State’s position in support of the establishment of State Police Services.
