The Federal Government has introduced a mandatory drug test for all newly admitted secondary school students across Nigeria as part of new measures to curb substance abuse in educational institutions.

The policy, contained in the National Implementation Guidelines Against Drug and Substance Use in Schools in Nigeria, also provides for periodic and unannounced drug tests for both new and returning students at least once every academic session.

According to the document, the initiative is aimed at creating a safer learning environment and reducing the negative impact of drug abuse on students’ mental health and academic performance.

Education Minister, Tunji Alausa, explained that the move is part of broader reforms to address rising concerns over drug use among young people in schools.

The guideline states that all new students shall undergo drug tests at the point of entry into secondary schools, in collaboration with approved federal and state health facilities.

It further adds that students found to be consistently positive after treatment and rehabilitation may face temporary suspension, as part of efforts to encourage recovery and discipline.

In addition, the policy prohibits the use or possession of narcotic drugs and other controlled substances without authorization from school authorities.

The Federal Government said the measures are designed to strengthen discipline, promote healthy lifestyles, and safeguard the future of learners across the country.
