The Federal Government has approved a waiver exempting candidates seeking admission into Colleges of Education from sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), in a major shift to ease access to teacher education programmes across the country.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the policy on Monday in Abuja during the 2026 admission policy meeting organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. He explained that candidates with a minimum of four credit passes in relevant subjects will now be eligible to apply for National Certificate in Education programmes without writing UTME, though registration with JAMB remains compulsory.

According to him, the new arrangement will still require applicants to undergo credential screening, verification, and certification through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) before final admission letters are issued, in line with existing regulations.

Alausa said the reform is designed to expand access to education and address the growing demand for teachers, noting that Colleges of Education have the capacity to absorb more candidates, particularly from local communities.

“This policy is aimed at widening access, reducing pressure on UTME, and encouraging more participation in teacher education,” he said.

He added that the policy will take effect from the next admission cycle and also extends to some National Diploma programmes in agriculture-related fields.

The minister further commended the Federal Ministry of Education and JAMB for initiatives supporting inclusive education, especially for persons living with disabilities.
