Popular gospel singer, Yinka Alaseyori has tendered a public apology following widespread criticism that trailed her comments on the abduction of school pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
The singer made the apology in a video shared on her Instagram page on Wednesday, where she addressed concerns raised by Nigerians who felt her earlier remarks on the incident were insensitive to victims and their families.
Alaseyori explained that her intention was not to diminish the gravity of the kidnapping or dismiss public emotions surrounding the tragedy, adding that she regretted the interpretation her comments attracted.
She said she had earlier spoken on the incident while encouraging prayers and also noting efforts by the Federal Government and security agencies to secure the release of the abducted pupils. However, the response to her message, she noted, showed that many Nigerians felt hurt by her position.
In her words, she pleaded for forgiveness, especially from parents affected by the incident.
“You know me too well that I would never make you feel like that. Mothers, do not be offended. I am sorry. I beg in God’s name. Please, forgive me,” she said.
Her initial comments had sparked debate on social media, with some users arguing that calls for prayers alone were not enough, insisting that stronger security action was required to ensure the safe return of the abducted victims.
The abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has continued to draw national concern, with growing calls for urgent rescue efforts and improved security measures to prevent further attacks on schools.
