A bill seeking to strengthen the judiciary and another aimed at improving rural roads administration in Ogun State have scaled second reading at the Ogun State House of Assembly.
The two bills, namely the Ogun State Judicial Institute Bill, 2026 and the Ogun State Rural Access Roads Agency (Amendment) Bill, 2026, were debated and passed for second reading during Thursday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide.
The lawmakers also received for first reading a bill seeking to regulate matters relating to the termination of pregnancy.
Leading debate on the Judicial Institute Bill, its sponsor, Hon. Oluseun Adesanya, urged lawmakers to support its speedy passage, saying it would establish a professional training institution for staff of the state judiciary and other related personnel.
According to him, the proposed legislation would provide the legal framework for regulating the activities of the institute, establish its administrative and political leadership structure, and strengthen professionalism within the judiciary.
He said, “The proposed legislation will create a professional training institution for staff members of the State judiciary and other related matters. It will provide the legal framework to regulate the activities of the proposed institution, establish its administrative and political leadership structure and enhance professionalism and efficiency of the judiciary.”
Also speaking on the Ogun State Rural Access Roads Agency (Amendment) Bill, its sponsor, Hon. Babatunde Tella, said the amendment became necessary to correct an omission in the existing law regarding the remuneration of the agency’s Director General.
Tella explained that the amendment was intended to address the identified gap in the legislation and strengthen the operational structure of the agency.
“The proposed amendment has become necessary to address the identified gap in the existing law and strengthen the operational structure of the agency,” he said.
Following deliberations, Speaker Elemide referred the Judicial Institute Bill to the House Committee on Justice, Ethics and Public Petitions, while the Rural Access Roads Agency Amendment Bill was committed to the House Committee on Water Resources, Energy and Rural Development for further legislative action.
The Speaker also announced during the plenary that the lawmaker representing Ijebu East State Constituency, Hon. Waliu Owode, had returned to the Peoples Democratic Party, making him the only minority member in the Ogun State House of Assembly.
