A Primary 3 pupil, Salami Aminat, has become an internet sensation after her humorous classroom debate in defence of garri over rice captivated Nigerians and sparked widespread reactions across social media.
In a video that has gone viral, the young pupil confidently argued in favour of the motion that garri is better than rice, drawing laughter and applause from classmates, teachers and guests with her witty presentation.
Opening her speech with a rhetorical question, Aminat said, “Before I start, let me ask a simple question. If rice is truly better, why do people shout, ‘Garri has finish?'”
She described garri as a dependable meal that comes to the rescue of many Nigerians during difficult times, stressing that unlike rice, it does not require cooking before it can be eaten.
The pupil told her audience, “Rice is for party. Garri is for salvation. Rice is occasionally, garri is dependable.”
She also joked that while rice makes people wait for it to boil, garri only needs water and a cup to satisfy hunger, a statement that drew loud laughter from the audience.
Adding more humour to her presentation, Aminat created an acronym for the word “Garri”, describing it as “G, giver of energy. A, attitude changer. R, reassurance of hope. R, reduction of the thirsty. I, increasial of achievement.”
She further referred to garri with playful nicknames such as “Students’ power,” “time supporter,” and “hunger destroyer,” earning cheers from those present.
The debate performance has since generated thousands of reactions online, with many Nigerians commending the young pupil’s confidence, creativity and public speaking skills despite her age.
Several social media users described the presentation as one of the most entertaining classroom debates they had watched, while others said the speech reflected the place of garri as a staple food in many Nigerian homes.
