Three persons were hospitalised after separate road crashes occurred at different locations across Lagos in the early hours of Saturday, with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency attributing the incidents to excessive speeding and poor road conditions.
The agency confirmed that the crashes occurred at Olupese Bus Stop inward Oshodi, Aswani Bus Stop inward Iyana Isolo, and Oba Ogunji Road in Ikeja. No fatalities were recorded in any of the incidents.
According to LASEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale, the first incident happened around 12:07 a.m. when a truck conveying granite developed a mechanical fault after its rear tyre became trapped in a pothole at Olupese Bus Stop, obstructing traffic inward Oshodi. He said emergency responders swiftly diverted traffic and deployed heavy duty recovery equipment to clear the road.
Less than an hour later, at about 12:59 a.m., a Toyota Sienna collided with an oncoming truck at Aswani Bus Stop, forcing the truck off the road and into a culvert. Two women and one man sustained injuries and received immediate medical attention before they were evacuated to a hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Service.
Olawale said the truck was later recovered and handed over to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, while the Sienna was released to officers of the Aswani Police Station after recovery operations.
The third accident occurred at about 1:19 a.m. on Oba Ogunji Road, involving a Ministry of Environment concrete mixer truck and a Volkswagen bus. Preliminary findings indicated that excessive speeding by the bus driver caused the collision. No injuries or deaths were recorded, while emergency responders carried out mechanical repairs on the mixer truck before clearing both vehicles from the road.
Reacting to the incidents, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, commended the coordinated response of emergency agencies, saying their swift intervention ensured the crashes were managed without loss of life.
He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to improving road safety through continuous investment in emergency response equipment, personnel training and inter agency collaboration.
Oke-Osanyintolu also urged motorists to avoid excessive speeding and promptly report damaged roads to the appropriate authorities, stressing that responsible driving remains essential to preventing avoidable road crashes.
