His death was announced in a statement by the Media Aide to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Adeola Oloko, who described the late chief as a seasoned journalist and former multiple Press Secretary to past governors of Oyo State.

“The veteran journalist and multiple Press Secretary to former Oyo State governors, Lekan Alabi, is dead. The Abese Olubadan passed away this morning in Lagos at the age of 76 years,” the statement said.

Family sources disclosed that the late Ibadan chief will be laid to rest on Saturday in accordance with Islamic rites.

Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s accomplished media professionals, Alabi built an enduring career in journalism before serving in various public communication roles. He was also a prominent cultural advocate whose contributions to the preservation and promotion of Ibadan’s history and Yoruba cultural heritage earned him widespread respect.

Beyond his media career, Alabi held the traditional title of Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, where he played an active role in promoting the customs and values of the ancient city.

His death has drawn condolences from associates, media practitioners, traditional rulers and political figures, many of whom have described him as an accomplished communicator, historian and elder statesman whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Further details on funeral arrangements and official tributes are expected from the family and the Olubadan-in-Council.
