Twelve people were killed and two others injured in a road traffic crash involving two Volkswagen cars along the Kaduna-Kachia Road in southern Kaduna on Saturday.
The crash occurred at Doka Village and involved 14 persons comprising eight males and six females, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The Sector Commander, FRSC Kaduna State Command, Andrew Paul Longkam, said eight males and four females died in the crash, while two females sustained injuries.
Longkam said the injured victims were immediately taken to Rapha Hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Idon General Hospital pending contact with their relatives.
He identified the vehicles involved as a blue Volkswagen Golf 3, with registration number APP 394 FN, driven by Alex Bako, and a red Volkswagen Golf III, with registration number ACN 205 HK, driven by Jerry Ankunle.
According to the FRSC commander, the probable cause of the crash was a tyre burst.
He added that none of the passengers, including the two drivers, was wearing a seat belt or any other protective gear at the time of the crash.
Longkam said the crash was reported at about 10:20 a.m., while the FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene at 10:50 a.m. to complement soldiers and police personnel already at the scene.
“The injured victims were immediately evacuated to Rapha Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Idon General Hospital pending contact with their relatives,” he said.
