The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has arrested a factory manager following the discovery of an illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, where three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters were allegedly bearing a falsified registration number belonging to a cough syrup.
The agency disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X page on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, following an investigation prompted by a report published by The Guardian on October 10, 2026, concerning herbal products bearing falsified NAFDAC registration numbers.
According to the agency, its investigative team conducted surveillance before raiding the facility, where it discovered three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters bearing NAFDAC registration number A7-1827L.
NAFDAC said verification through its National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control Automated Product Administration and Monitoring System (NAPAMS) portal revealed that the registration number belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup, indicating its fraudulent use on the herbal products.
The agency described the discovery as part of its ongoing efforts to curb the production and distribution of unregistered and falsely labelled products in the country.
It added that the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer was absent during the operation, while the factory manager was arrested for further interrogation.
NAFDAC urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected illegal manufacturing activities to the appropriate authorities.
The agency provided its call centre numbers, 0800-1-623322 and 0700-1-623322, as well as its email address, reforms@nafdac.gov.ng, for the submission of credible information.
The operation comes amid a series of enforcement actions by NAFDAC against counterfeit and illegally manufactured products across the country.
On October 14, the agency seized counterfeit alcoholic beverages valued at more than ₦2 billion during a raid at the International Trade Fair Complex in Lagos.
The operation followed an earlier enforcement exercise at Ile-Epo Market, where alcoholic beverages worth an estimated ₦300 million were seized.
