A helicopter ferrying Hindu pilgrims to a sacred site in the Himalayas crashed early Sunday morning in India’s Uttarakhand state, killing all seven people on board.

The tragic incident occurred just minutes after takeoff from Kedarnath, a well-known pilgrimage town, en route to Guptkashi.

According to officials, the helicopter, operated by Aryan Aviation, lost control around 5:30am local time and went down in a forested area near the Kedarnath pilgrimage route.

The wreckage was found engulfed in flames, with smoke and debris scattered across the mountainous terrain.

Authorities believe poor weather conditions were a contributing factor in the crash. “The visibility was extremely low and the terrain is treacherous,” one local official said.

“These conditions can change within minutes and pose a significant danger to aerial travel.”

All those killed were identified as the pilot and pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Emergency teams said the bodies were badly burned due to the fire that followed the impact.

One rescue official at the site remarked, “We are deeply saddened by this incident. The bodies were charred, and the crash left nothing salvageable. The investigation will determine what went wrong, but weather seems to be a key factor.”

The Kedarnath region, which houses one of the most sacred Hindu shrines, attracts tens of thousands of visitors each summer.

Many pilgrims opt for helicopter travel to bypass the steep and rugged trekking routes. However, aviation safety in the area has come under scrutiny in recent years due to repeated accidents.

Just earlier this month, a helicopter in the same region was forced to make an emergency landing on a highway after takeoff. Though the pilot was injured, the five passengers survived.

In a separate incident in May, another helicopter crash in Uttarkashi claimed six lives.

The Indian aviation authority has now initiated a review of flight operations in the area. “Safety protocols must be strengthened,” a senior official said.

“This tragedy underscores the risks associated with high-altitude flights in unstable weather.”

The crash comes only days after India was rocked by another aviation tragedy an Air India flight that crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad, killing at least 270 people.

Families of the victims in the helicopter crash are expected to arrive in Uttarakhand as authorities complete identification and begin post-crash investigations.
