The Oyo State Government has declared Friday, June 27, 2025, as a work-free day to allow residents, particularly Muslims, to mark the beginning of the new Islamic year, Hijrah 1447AH.

The announcement was contained in a circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo, and made available to the public on Wednesday.

According to the government, the gesture is aimed at giving Muslims and other residents across the state the opportunity to celebrate the Islamic New Year and reflect on its spiritual significance.

The state also urged citizens to use the occasion to offer prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.

“The Governor enjoins all and sundry to use the occasion to pray for the peace, unity, and prosperity of the state in particular, and the country in general,” the statement added.

The work-free day applies to all public offices and institutions within the state.

Hijrah marks the migration of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah, a significant event that symbolizes the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar.

Oyo joins other states across the country in recognising the day as a public holiday to honour the Islamic tradition and foster religious harmony.
