As the world marks the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today, June 26th, Founder and Coordinator of The SixthSense Initiative, Abiodun Lasile, has called for a change in mindset, stressing that drug addiction should be treated as a public health crisis, not just a crime.

Lasile, in a statement to commemorate the global event, noted that the devastating impact of substance abuse on individuals, families, and communities demands urgent collective action.

According to him, the fight against drug abuse requires a balanced approach that prioritises prevention, treatment, law enforcement, and respect for the dignity of those affected.

His words, “This day reminds us that the global struggle against drug abuse is far from over. While laws and enforcement are important, we must never forget that addiction is first a health challenge. Those battling substance abuse deserve access to care, treatment, counselling, and compassion.”

Lasile advocated for prevention through education, especially for young people, stressing the need for accurate information, awareness campaigns, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.

He also urged international collaboration among governments and agencies to disrupt drug trafficking networks and reduce the supply of illicit substances.

“By working together, we can build a society free from the chains of drug abuse. It starts with awareness, compassion, and shared responsibility. No one is immune. We may all be guilty as charged,” Lasile concluded.
